VICTORIAN Department of Primary Industries research scientist, David Moody, is moving to Western Australia to take up a job breeding barley.

Mr Moody will work for Intergrain, a joint venture of the Department of Agriculture and Food WA and the Grains Research and Development Corporation.

Mr Moody has moved full circle, as he was Victoria's barley breeder for many years until the State Government abolished the sector about four years ago.

He developed the buloke and hindmarsh varieties during his time with the DPI.

He spent two years as a research scientist with the Birchip Cropping Group before returning to the DPI two years ago to manage its cereal genetics section.

In his new job, Mr Moody will be responsible for developing barley varieties for the eastern states, so he will travel back to Victoria regularly.

AWB wheat pool returns steady

AWB Limited's wheat pool returns have remained steady during the past week.

Australian Premium White wheat is estimated at $263 a tonne.

AWB commodities general manager Mitch Morison said the international trade in wheat was quiet over the Christmas period.

"International commodity prices have lifted a little but so has the Australian dollar," Mr Morison said.

"The main issue is that the fundamental supply and demand picture for wheat has not changed."
