HEIFER calves sold to extraordinarily good competition at Hamilton today with the best pen making $620.

Most pens made between 165-175c/kg, with a couple of standout pens making over 200c/kg.

Many onlookers quoted the heifers as averaging about 170c/kg.

Restockers were outbid by lotfeeders at the sale, with large orders booked by commission buyers for feedlots.

About 3300 heifers sold, with agents believing prices were on par with last years rates.

The heaviest calves were Charolais weaners offered by Glenayre, with the best of the run of 101 calves making 157c/kg, for 373kg heifers.

The best of the European calves, 300kg-plus made from 160 to 205c/kg, with a couple of standout pens of Limousins, 250kg, making 226c/kg.

The Mt Widderan Hereford 323kg calves made 192c/kg.

Weaned calves commanded a 5-10c/kh premium.

Steve Rennie, from Elders, bought 165 heifers which will go onto grass before going into the feedlot and commission buyer Dennis Henerson bought 500-plus heifers for various clients.

However, Andrew Whan from Miller Whan and John at Mt Gambier bought 715 heifers – almost a quarter of the yarding.
