NEW figures show greenhouse gas emissions from energy use across the eastern states has declined substantially in the past year.
International non-governmental organisation The Climate Group has tracked the 2009 weekly energy consumption in Victoria, NSW, Queensland and South Australia and found emissions were down by 5.3 million tonnes on the previous year.
That's a cut of 1.8 per cent.
The Climate Group says the main factor was cuts to electricity from coal, down 3.1 per cent.
While emission reduction happened in all states the cuts weren't uniform with Victoria and Queensland making the least progress.
