AUSTRALIAN oilseeds are in demand in both the domestic and international markets.

Victoria and NSW are well supported by an efficient supply chain. Current oilseed production is about 3000 mt per annum.

Australian oils and oilseeds have gained an excellent reputation with domestic and international buyers based on  the efficiency of our supply chains.

As a result Australian oilseeds are popular in the food industry to meet the growing demand for healthy oils. Popular oilseeds include monounsaturated sunflower, canola, high oleic canola, poly, and cotton seed.

Planting canola as a break crop in a rotation with wheat is another way planting canola can benefit the grower.

Research during the past decade shows that wheat grown after canola will have a better yield than if wheat is grown two seasons in a row.

This is due to improved access to soil nitrogen, soil water, a reduced chance of disease and it can be planted earlier.

While canola is a valuable crop, its beneficial qualities in a rotation make it even more attractive.  An increase in hectares planted across the East Coast is expected in the coming year.

Before deciding what variety of canola to plant, it is important to consider maturity, herbicide tolerance, blackleg resistance and early vigour together with relative yield and oil content

For many years, oilseed crops have been marketed in the final stages of growth and production cashed at harvest.

Australian Grain Accumulation offers alternatives to this process, offering  a hectare contract based on crop hectares produced as opposed to tonnes in the silo.
