ONE of the Poll Hereford breed's oldest performance recorded studs, Pine Hill, will disperse in March.

Owned by Andrew and Anne Hicks, of Holbrook, in southern NSW, the herd will be sold on March 11.

The sale will represent the end of 63 years of breeding, for the stud, which was established by Keith and Mary Hicks at Rowville in 1947.

Andrew said his father had gone against the grain, and selected Herefords without horns.

In its early days, the stud competed at local and Royal shows, culminating with Pine Hill Expo winning interbreed champion bull at Melbourne show in the 1980s.

"Pine Hill has always had a focus on measurable economic traits and, upon moving to Holbrook in 1986, we concentrated on balanced traits for our commercial clients," Andrew said.

Pine Hill was one of the first Poll Hereford herds to use Breedplan in the early 1970s, and has bred for moderate birthweight, easy calving, growth and carcass traits.

The dispersal will feature 100 registered autumn and spring-calving females, and several stud sires.

Andrew said his son Tom was joining the business and the family was consolidating three herds to two, including Red Angus and composite cows.
