FLOCK rams sold to $2000 and averaged $802 at the Armdale and Armdale Park Poll Dorset summer sale last week.

Buyers also paid to $1200 for the 2004 and 2008-drop scanned-in-lamb stud ewes.

Held by the Armstrong family on-property at Marrar, in southern NSW, the sale grossed $129,350.

A total of 73 rams were sold from an offering of 96.

The overall average of $631 for ewes and rams was well up on last year's $497.

Most buyers came from southern NSW and the Southern Tablelands, although there was also one Tasmanian buyer.

Vendor Garry Armstrong was hospitalised before the sale, with 14-year-old son Sam ably taking over official duties on the day.

Colin Weissel of Elders Wagga Wagga bought the top-priced flock ram for $2000 on behalf of Roger Honner, Illabo.

Kim Weir from Pinewalla Poll Dorset stud at Crookwell paid the top ewe price of $1200 for a 2008 drop, scanned-in-lamb stud ewe.

Buyer competition was as equally as strong on the five-year-old ewes as it was on the 2008 drop, with 132 lots averaging $536.

Underpinning the sale were Andy and Tania Carrigan of Merriwa, who bought 68 joined and unjoined stud ewes.

The couple are building ewe numbers within their Clermont Park stud which they bought in 2002.

"I thought the sale was strong and the Armstrongs should be pleased," Mr Carrigan said.

"It was a good even offering of ewes without any tail in the draft.

"About 90-95 pr cent of the ewes we bought were scanned-in-lamb and they averaged $450."

Armdale-Armdale Park stud manager Chris Marr said the sale had attracted strong repeat buyer support with the addition of several new clients.

"This was probably the best draft of ewes ever sold and buyer confidence was high on the back of good lamb prices," Mr Marr said.

"We expect the high prices in the lamb market to flow through to the seedstock sector in time and lift ram prices."

Mr Marr added to his own Gererdan Poll Dorset stud with a $1100 2004-drop ewe, bought in partnership with the Robinson family from Ferndale Poll Dorsets at Walla Walla.
