YEARLING bulls are the way to go, according to Brian Mobbs, joint principal of the High Spa Angus stud at Daylesford.

"The days of selling two-year-old bulls are old hat," said Mr Mobbs.

"Buyers are becoming more confident of the figures behind each bull without having to wait to see what they look like as two-year-olds."

Like an increasing number of Angus stud breeders, Brian and Wayne Mobbs are putting more emphasis on marketing young bulls.

At their Beef Week display on Sunday, the Mobbs had 41 bulls on offer, 34 of which were March 2009-drop.

Brian Mobbs said there were other advantages to selling young bulls.

They were less expensive for both the breeder and the buyer, and there was less risk of broken legs - a problem associated with older bulls who fight.

Rather than run an auction, the Mobbs chose to market their bulls privately, beginning with their Beef Week field day.

Bulls were priced upwards of $2100.
