THE South Australian government will spend $1 million to remove carp from Lake Albert near the Murray mouth.

Fisheries Minister Paul Caica said large numbers of the pest fish species had been attracted to the narrow area of the lake due to the pumping of water from the neighbouring Lake Alexandrina.

"The fact that the fish are now naturally gathering in a concentrated area provides an opportunity to remove as many of this pest species as possible," Mr Caica said.

"This effort will significantly reduce the impact on the community of potential carp deaths in the lake, should salinity levels become high later in the year.

"The removal of the pest species will also help the natural environment."

A professional fisher has been engaged to remove the carp from the lake and is expected to begin work soon.

Mr Caica said it was not known how many fish were in the lake but the program would aim to remove as many as possible.
