A YEAR after Black Saturday, Project Hope Horse Welfare Victoria has launched its new Horse Crisis Register.

The register has been set up to support emergency evacuation, temporary homing and transportation of horses in the event of another major crisis.

The register relies on horse owners registering what assistance they can offer in the event of an emergency such as fire or floods.

"Victims of a fire or flood will be able to view information on offers of assistance in their vicinity and be able to contact those people making the offer directly," PHHWV vice president Tania Smith said.

Information that can be obtained from the register will include details of the location and contact details of the person making the offer, the period horses can be accommodated and the number of horses that can be supported.

"This register is a way to enhance communication in a crisis situation and is purely designed to facilitate that communication," Ms Smith said.

"It will be the horse owner's responsibility to ensure the offer they are considering meets their needs and to develop a formal agreement with the other party on the terms of the assistance provided." Ms Smith says.

All Victorians that have the capabilities to offer assistance are encouraged to register their offer of help.
