VICTORIA'S alpine rivers and streams are in excellent condition with good numbers of trout on offer.
Rocky Valley Lake is producing brown trout to 700g on mudeyes and hoppers, and Mt Beauty Pondage is producing rainbow trout to 1.5kg and brown trout to 950g.
Fly fishers are doing well in the Kiewa River for brown trout to 1.5kg. Successful fly patterns include size 14-16 Kossie Dun, Grey Wulff or March Brown.
A size 14, weighted nymph placed 30cm below the dry fly can act as an attractor; often it is the nymph that trout strike.
The upper Mitta Mitta River from Glen Wills to Anglers Rest and on to Benambra is in excellent condition.
The Bundarra River at Anglers Rest holds good numbers of brown trout. The lower Mitta Mitta River near Eskdale has brown and rainbow trout to 600g.
The best baits are live wattle (or willow) grubs, mudeyes, crickets and grasshoppers drifted under a half-filled small bubble float.
Snowy Creek at Granite Flat is producing brown trout to 450g on grubs and small lures.
At Eildon, redfin are being caught on lures, scrubworms and yabbies. Eildon Pondage has rainbow trout to 900g being caught on Powerbait.
Newlands Reservoir is low but producing redfin to 2kg on bladed lures.
Bob McPherson at Portland reports snapper to 2kg and gummy sharks being caught off the Lee Breakwater.
King George whiting averaging about 750g are being caught near Black Nose.
Large schools of salmon are working close to the harbour.
Beach anglers are doing will with mulloway to 8kg, gummy and school sharks to 25kg caught from Snapper Point to the Fitzroy River.
In the Western District, anglers fishing from shore at Lake Bullen Merri are catching rainbow trout to 1.1kg on Powerbait. At Lake Purrumbete, rainbow trout to 1.8kg are being caught on bullhead gudgeon about 6m deep under a float.
In the saltwater, the Hopkins River at Warrnambool has bream to 32cm on black shell.
The Curdies River is slow for bream to 35cm on scrubworms.
Beaches from Peterborough to Princetown in the southwest are holding salmon to 700g and pinkies to 35cm.
The Gellibrand River has estuary perch to 36cm being caught on sandworms.
Aire River, above the Ford River junction, is fishing well for bream to 43cm on worms.
Port Phillip Bay snapper are slow. The best reports come from the deep water between Mornington and Mt Martha, where fish to 4kg are being caught on pilchard and silver whiting. Garfish are spread around the bay and being caught on maggot fished in a berley.
In South Gippsland, Western Port is producing King George whiting to 45cm in Coronet Bay, Corinella, Tortoise Head and the Middle Spit on mussel, squid and pipi baits.
Salmon are in good numbers at the Western Entrance and being caught trolling white, skirted jigs. Calamari squid are being caught at Flinders and in Cleeland Bight on baited jigs.
The Tarwin River has yelloweye mullet, silver trevally and estuary perch. Waratah Bay has salmon to 800g caught on chicken strips and whitebait.
In the Gippsland Lakes, the Mitchell, Tambo and Nicholson Rives have bream and flathead taking prawn and lures.
Flathead are biting in the bay at Metung on lures and prawn.
Hollands Landing has bream being caught at the boat ramp on prawn.
Large bream are being caught from the Lakes Entrance post office jetty on prawn.
At Lake Tyers, bream are biting on prawn near the Trident Arm, and flathead are taking soft plastic lures worked on the sand banks.
The estuary system at Marlo is producing silver trevally, bream and estuary perch on local prawn.
Mallacoota Inlet has bream taking prawn, yabbies and lures at Gipsy Point. Salmon and silver trevally are being caught from the wharf in the Bottom Lake on prawn.
