TRUCK drivers whose noisy rigs disturb the peace will be snapped by new noise cameras, and risk having their registrations suspended.
The Victorian government has announced the noise camera system to monitor heavy vehicles in a bid to reduce excessive truck noise on the state's roads.
Roads Minister Tim Pallas said the new cameras would begin operating next month to crack down on engine brake noise, which has become a problem in some residential areas.
Mr Pallas said the cameras were triggered by excessive noise and took pictures of the offending vehicle, as well as recording the noise level, location and time.
The owner then receives a notice of non-compliance and will have to have the truck tested at an approved noise-testing station.
If the truck is non-compliant, the vehicle's registration will be suspended.
The areas to be targeted include the Geelong Ring Road near Waurn Ponds, Frankston, Yarraville, Buninyong and Southbank.
