A VICTORIAN horse trainer who became a paraplegic when a horse fell on him while exercising in sand has been awarded $300,000 in damages.
Trainer Glenn Hancock had warned his bosses at Riverend Park stables in outer-eastern Melbourne that the sand in a horse sandroll was too deep, the Victorian Supreme Court heard.
On September 22, 2006, Mr Hancock was training a two-year-old horse in the sandroll when it became spooked and fell on him, crushing his back and ribs, and leaving him a paraplegic.
Mr Hancock and Riverend Park came to an agreement on Friday, after a jury was dismissed, that he should receive $300,000 for the injuries he suffered in the accident.
This was on top of $455,000 that he is being paid under the Accident Compensation Act.
Mr Hancock had claimed that his injuries were caused by the negligence of Riverend Park.
