DAIRY farmers have another month to register the water used in their dairies through the Dairy Shed Water Licence Transition Program.
Department of Sustainability and Environment licensing manager, Patrick O'Halloran, said the amnesty deadline had been pushed back to March 26 following requests from the Victorian Farmers Federation and concerns from farmers that they would not be able to meet the original deadline of this Friday.
"There are still quite a few farmers rushing to get applications completed. This will give them more time," he said.
Southern Rural Water had received about 750 applications by the end of last week, 56 of which arrived on Friday.
Goulburn Murray Water had received 86 applications by Monday afternoon.
The aim of the program has been to ensure water used in each dairy is licensed, to help resolve future water-security problems.
United Dairyfarmers of Victoria president Chris Griffin welcomed the extra month and said some farmers were waiting for a reply from the Victorian Government regarding dam registrations before they made a decision about their application.
Last October, the UDV wrote to Water Minister Tim Holding requesting dairy farmers not be charged to register their dams and that the annual fees on dams under the Dairy Shed Water Licence Transition Program be waived.
On Monday, Mr Griffin said he was still awaiting a response from the minister.
Meanwhile, a group of farmers at Simpson, in the Western District, have continued their opposition to the program.
Cooriemungle dairy farmer Alex McKenzie, who heads the group, said about 50 farmers attended a meeting last week where it was decided the group would request an extra year to register their water and also lobby local MPs to scrap the legislation.
Mr McKenzie said the group would send a letter to the minister requesting a meeting to discuss its claims that dairy farmers were being discriminated against when it came to water legislation.
He again questioned the motive behind the program, labelling it "a grab for cash" rather than a real concern for water security.
