A SUBURBAN footballer who died during grand final celebrations in Geelong was "very very drunk" and unsteady on his feet before the incident, a court heard today.

During a committal hearing at Geelong Magistrates’ Court for East Geelong football club reserves player Daniel Singleton, witness Callen Inderberg said he spoke to the victim, Nathan Alsop, about 20 minutes before he hit the ground after allegedly being punched, the Herald Sun reports.

Mr Inderberg said Mr Alsop – a reserves teammate of Mr Singleton – was slurring his words, unsteady on his feet and had urinated on the oval towards the clubhouse in the lead up to the incident.

He said he did not see Mr Singleton punch Mr Alsop and only saw the victim falling to the ground.

“It was kind of just like a casual flop almost,” Mr Inderberg said.

Witness Gerard Henderson denied he heard Mr Alsop tell Mr Singleton that he knew he was having sex with his wife in the minutes leading up to the incident.

Mr Anderson told the court that Mr Alsop had accused Mr Singleton of “taking his wife to the footy”.

Nathan Alsop, 37, died just before midnight on September 12 last, as he joined in celebrations for the premiership winning East Geelong Football Club senior team.

He was survived by wife Tara and two children, Finn, 4, and Meg, 2.

The committal hearing continues.
