NOEL Watson may have just found his new calling - literally.

The Swan Hill real estate agent suddenly found himself in the hot seat last week, calling the first race at Nyah trots.

Noel, who is on the Nyah Harness Racing Club committee, got a call to say regular race-caller Craig Rail was stuck in Melbourne and could he call the first few race until he got there?

Noel has called footy for local radio for 20 years but had never tackled a horse race.

'I didn't have binoculars or even a race book and so had to scribble down the names of the horses and their colours on a scrap of paper," he said.

But Noel need not have worried. He got the important bit right, which was the first four past the post.

And Back Paddock listened to a replay of the last lap of Noel's call, which was broadcast on TV and radio, and couldn't tell the difference between him and Greg Miles.
