IN EAST Gippsland, the bottom lake at Mallacoota Inlet has bream, pinkies, garfish and dusky flathead being caught on local prawn and bass yabbies.

The top lake is producing tailor on lures. Most beaches from Mallacoota to Lakes Entrance are producing salmon on metal lures, or bluebait fished in conjunction with a surf popper.

Bream and tailor are biting in the entrance channel at Bemm River on local prawn and lures.

In the Gippsland Lakes, Lake Tyers is fishing well for bag limit catches of bream and silver trevally to 3kg.

Rigby Channel at Lakes Entrance has tailor and flathead being caught on pilchard and soft plastic lures.

The Mitchell, Nicholson and Tambo Rivers are producing flathead, bream and garfish on sandworm, prawn and lures.

In South Gippsland, Alan McFayden reports Port Welshpool jetties are offering a mixed bag of garfish, mullet, flathead and tailor.

Shallow Inlet is steady for King George whiting to 40cm, flathead and gummy sharks.

Salmon to 1.7kg are being caught in the surf from waratah Bay through to Kilcunda.

In Western Port, gummy sharks to 12kg are being caught along the channel off Ventnor on squid and salmon.

King George whiting from 33cm to 49cm are taking squid, mussel, pipi and pilchard strips on the Quail and Tyabb Banks on the flood tide, Middle Spit and Cat Bay.

The best bite in Port Phillip Bay is King George whiting. Brett Terossi reports whiting from 32cm to 44cm are being caught from Werribee to Altona, Frankston and Rye to Sorrento.

Mick Kaksa says calamari squid are in good numbers at Point Cook and Altona.

The Maribyrnong River has bream to 35 cm taking lures and yelloweye mullet are in the river in large numbers.

Lake Eildon is producing redfin to 1.4kg at Taylor Bay on worms and yabbies.

Rainbow trout to 1.2kg are taking slow trolled anchovies and No 5 Stumpjumper lures at about 10m deep.

In the Western District, Doug Lucas reports that Lake Purrumbete has redfin to 800g taking gudgeon.

Brown and rainbow trout are slowly coming back on the bite with fish to 2kg being caught on mudeyes and trolled Loftys lures.

The Merri River at Warrnambool is producing brown trout to 3kg on hard body lures.

Wurdiboluc Reservoir has redfin to 1kg and rainbow trout to 1.8kg being caught on lures and flies.

Doug says salmon to 1.5 kg are being caught from the break wall at Apollo Bay. The Aire River estuary, upstream from the old bridge, has bream to 42cm taking scrubworms.

In the Gellibrand River, estuary perch to 30cm are taking soft plastic lures and sandworms.

Portland angler Bob McPherson reports southern bluefin tuna numbers are building between Portland and Port MacDonnell. Anglers are catching fish to 30kg trolling skirted lures.

The North Shore has yellowtail kingfish to 8kg. Salmon to 2.5kg are schooling just outside the harbour, and King George whiting to about 750g are being caught off Black Nose Point.
