A NEW antibiotic has been licensed by the US Food and Drug Administration for use in horses.

Pfizer Animal Health said Excede Sterile Suspension represented the first safe and effective, long-acting antibiotic formulation licensed for horses.

The drug, already approved for use in cattle and pigs, is recommended for the treatment of lower respiratory tract infections in horses caused by susceptible bacterial strains of Streptococcus equi ssp. zooepidemicus.

Pfizer said the drug offered an extended duration of action, with fewer injections compared to other antibiotic treatments on the market.

There was a low risk of side effects, Pfizer said.
