HOW'S this for a solution to our crumbling country roads?

A sponsor-a-pothole scheme.

In the German village of Niederzimmern, the local authority has come up with the novel idea of selling potholes to civic-minded locals.

Sponsors can get their pothole named after them by coughing up $75 to fix it.

The benefactor gets his or her name on a plaque laid on the road next to the repair and the virtuous feeling of providing a smooth ride into town for all.

No word on whether the plaque by the road is a bigger traffic hazard than the original pothole.
