THE Australian Conservation Foundation has entered the water market, planning to buy about 200 million litres of water for use in the Hattah Lakes wetlands in Victoria.
The Australian Conservation Foundation, with financial support from credit union Mecu Limited, will spend about $40,000 next month purchasing water the equivalent of 80 Olympic size swimming pools.
Following records rains in Queensland the foundation is not convinced floodwaters entering the northern part of the Murray-Darling Basin will make it all the way to wetlands such as Hattah Lakes.
The foundation is giving people the chance to participate by donating $15 to the Just Add Water initiative which will buy about 75,000 litres based on recent average water prices.
The Hattah Lakes wetlands are about 70km south of Mildura.
