I'M A farmer but have quite a few city friends who shop at those big discount superstores where the trolleys are the size of Hummers.

They often cheerfully boast how cheap everything is.

I don't want to be a wet blanket but should I set them straight that it's not the supermarket being generous, it's the poor old farmers who have to give away their produce so the mega-stores can sell it so cheap.

Dear Des,

Bargain hunters are such a bore aren't they?

They are driven only by the dollar and couldn't care less if their food was produced by child slaves beaten with sticks, as long as they can buy one, get four free.

Don't be backward - tell it like it is so they understand who really pays for low prices.

Then ask if they would like to donate to your favourite charity - PETA - People for Ethical Treatment of Agriculturalists.
