ELDERS Myrtleford has spent $6000 improving its yards to be OH&S compliant ahead of its 70th Blue Ribbon weaner sale next Thursday, March 25.

According to Elders' Stephen Street, it will mean the calves will be sold in the pens rather than the sale ring. The sale of 1100 vendor-bred calves starts at 11.30am.

Food focus

PROCESSOR Hardwicks at Kyneton has opened its doors as part of the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival.

Mark Hardwick said a variety of farmers, chefs and pub owners had taken up the opportunity to visit the plant. The tours, which cost $70, continue next Monday and Tuesday from 10am.

Blonde beauties

THE third annual Southern Region Supreme Blonde d'Aquitaine sale will be held next Saturday, March 27, as part of the Lardner Park field days at Warragul.

On offer will be 20 bulls and 12 females. The society is also planning an inaugural multi-vendor sale for the breed at Yea on April 9.

Yes, sire

ELDERS will host a Merino sire-evaluation field day at Balmoral on April 16.

There will be 2008 and 2009-drop lambs on show from 21 studs across Australia.

Guest speakers include National Sire Evaluation chairman Knox Heggaton, who will talk about current and future roles of sire evaluations and Australian Wool Innovation project manager, Ian Evans, who will talk about the use of skin traction as an alternative to mulesing.
