Tasmanian poppies

A COMMITTEE has been formed by the Tasmanian Farmers and Graziers Association to represent the state's poppy growers.

TFGA chief executive Chris Oldfield said the move was at the request of growers, many of whom were supplying the only Australian-owned poppy processor, Tasmanian Poppy Industry Enterprises.

Independent TFGA director Amy Grubb is interim chairwoman of the poppy committee.

A meeting will be held on April 8 to establish the full committee and appoint a long-term chair.

Horti award

SEMINARS providing information about the new horticulture award will be held across Victoria.

The first of the 10 seminars will be in Melbourne next Tuesday and Mildura next Wednesday, followed by sessions at Cranbourne, the Yarra Valley, Swan Hill and Shepparton.

Hard copies of a guide to the award are available by phoning the Fair Work Infoline on 13 13 94.

Illegal workers

IMMIGRATION officers have continued to find illegal workers, detaining 14 people after raids in the Mildura area last week. A Department of Immigration spokesman said the workers - 10 from Malaysia, three from India and one from Singapore - would be deported.
