ELEPHANT fish are on the bite in Western Port, with anglers fishing from jetties and boats.
Cranbourne Bait and Tackle customer Peter Thompson caught three one night in a session on Corinella Pier using pilchards for bait.
Shayne Turner, another customer, fished from his boat out from Corinella for a mixed bag of elephant fish and gummy shark to 6kg or so.
Ron Smith, who sallied to Joes Island with a bag of calamari rings for bait, was also rewarded with two gummy sharks on the ebb tide.
PORT PHILLIP
Large numbers of small and undersize pinkies have been the dominant inshore catch.
In some areas they've made whiting fishing almost impossible, taking just about every bait.
In the southern reaches of Port Phillip, while small pinkies have still been a significant presence, you can pick up a good patch of whiting, with the edges of the West Channel off St Leonards worth trying on either tide.
Larger snapper are still present on the deep mud in Port Phillip and down the Geelong Arm into Corio Bay, but from all reports, they've been a night, or early-morning job.
PORTLAND
Both inshore and offshore anglers have been bringing in the goods.
On the wide grounds, Matthew Hunt landed an 86kg bluefin tuna.
Matt was out with clients on charter catching albacore when the big bluefin smashed a lure in the spread.
Also on the high seas off Portland were Rick and Robert Rizzo, Desmond Fielder and Glen Connell who returned with southern bluefin tuna to 30kg and albacore to 15kg, all caught in 800 metres of water on trolled lures.
EAST GIPPSLAND
Bemm River is worth a try with black bream the main species on offer, along with the occasional good size yellowfin bream.
The entrance channel is worth trying with lures, especially toward evening when tailor come on the bite.
Good size flathead have come from here as well and they've been taken both on bait and on lures.
The nearby beaches to Bemm River including Gunai Beach and Pearl Point are producing a variety of fish during the daytime including salmon and silver trevally. These have been taken on whitebait.
These beaches have produced some good size gummy shark at night, but with a good many bite-offs occurring after the sun goes down it pays to use a wire leader and ganged hooks.
VICTORIA'S ALPINE REGION
Geoff Lacey, of Towanga, reports that recent rain in Victoria's Alpine region has altered anglers' prospects quite a bit with the Rocky Valley Reservoir on the Bogong High Plains almost full and fishing well at the margins.
The Keiwa River is now running high and discoloured and is not a safe option for wading anglers
