PEOPLE travelling along the Hamilton highway recently did a double take when they saw a hay bale floating in a dam. Nothing too weird about that surely?

No, but this one was on fire.

The drama began when a bolt of lightning hit a hay bale in a paddock and ignited it.

By the time the CFA arrived, the bale was well alight and proving a bit hard to extinguish, so a neighbour got his tractor, lifted the bale up on the front-end-loader and dumped it in the nearest dam thereby learning the first law of hay physics: despite their weight hay bales don't sink.

More kerfuffle as the bale was fished out of the dam and properly doused.
