RESEARCH into sequestering carbon in soil should be made a high priority, a parliamentary committee has found.
The Farming the Future report from the House of Representatives Standing Committee on Primary Industries also recommended Government support rural counselling and support groups and deliver "flexible" adaptation programs.
It said soil sequestration and stabilisation, pasture improvements, water-use efficiency and soil-water retention should be "high-priority areas" for research funding.
The report also called for further research into reducing agriculture's carbon footprint.
"The Committee recommends the Australian Government ... increase its investment and support for research into energy efficiency in the agriculture sector and the development of alternative energy and alternative fuels on-farm, particularly in regard to: increased investment in energy sources such as biofuels, biochar and biomass from agricultural waste," the report said.
