THE fate of the Warrnambool saleyards is expected to be decided at a special council meeting tonight.
The Weekly Times understands the council is split on a decision to relinquish the shire-owned and operated Warrnambool saleyards on Caramut Road or upgrade the existing site to meet occupational health and safety, animal welfare and environmental standards.

Should the decision be made to abandon the current site, the ownership and operation of a new site will be open to private bids.
The Victorian Livestock Exchange is most likely to take on this challenge, having already bought land at Cudgee on which to develop a new site.
However, the Warrnambool Agents Association is strongly opposed to moving the yards and the VLE has indicated it will only embark on the project with the support of the Association and townspeople.
The meeting is scheduled to take place in the Civic Hall, but may be relocated to Warrnambool's Entertainment Centre to accommodate a large crowd of onlookers.
