A RENMARK citrus grower has wrested the high profile Riverland seat of Chaffey from South Australian Water Minister Karlene Maywald.
Liberal Party candidate Tim Whetstone ousted Ms Maywald from office on the back of a swing of more than 20 per cent in the weekend's state election.
Mr Whetstone is not expected to become Opposition water spokesman after the Liberals' narrow loss to the South Australian Labor Government.
But the former South Australian Murray Irrigators chairman said he would fight for greater water security for irrigators and a bigger share of Murray Darling Basin floodwater for his state.
"All too often, South Australia seems to be the poor cousin in the Murray Darling Basin," Mr Whetstone said.
"We are continually seeing our interstate counterparts on much higher allocations despite the fact we have only high security water."
Meanwhile the outcome of the Tasmanian election remained too close to call yesterday.
The weekend's election delivered 10 seats to Labor, nine to the Liberals and four to the Greens in the 25-member Parliament, with two seats undecided.
