I READ with interest the column "No material girl on this country farm" (WT, February 24) and the comment about growing up in the country.

I was the eldest of eight growing up in the country more than 70 years ago.

There was always lots to do, so we were never bored.

There was plenty of good home-grown food and Mum made our clothes by light of the kerosene lamp.

We helped milk the cows after school and at the weekends.

Now in retirement I appreciate all the mod-cons and look back and think how lucky I was to have a good life.
