FIRED by a bumper autumn, North East and Riverina restockers pushed steer prices to $740 at Tumut-Adelong today.

Selling agents Elders and Rob Stubbs Livestock and Property yarded 1650 cattle at Tumut and 1850 mixed sex weaners at Adelong.

Cattle sold to Albury-Wodonga, Wagga Wagga, Cootamundra, Gundagai, Warren, Forbes, Coonamble, Tumut, Hay, Yarrawonga, Mansfield and Myrtleford.

Myrtleford agents Dan Ivone, of Paull and Scollard, and Stephen Street, of Elders, helped put a floor in the market, buying a fair percentage of the yarding.

Mr Ivone, who paid the top grown steer price of $740, bought 162 steers and heifers for Alpine Valley restockers.

Active domestic lotfeeders at the annual blue ribbon weaner sale included Hopkins River Beef, Conroy Bros and Dowling Brothers.

At Tumut, unjoined heifers and calves topped at $1430 while those rejoined sold to $1210.

Grown steers, aged 12-14 months topped at $710 but demand was stronger for July-August drop steers, topping at $730.

Unjoined heifers sold at equal rates of $455-$680.

Buyers at Adelong were greeted with fresh lines of vendor bred calves, with the heavy end of the autumn drop steers selling to $740.

This was well in front of last year's top grown steer price of $670.

Demand was strong for unjoined heifers, particularly the lightweight weaners, with prices topping at $655.
