TWO of the largest players in the deregulated wheat industry, Vittera and GrainCorp, failed to show up to the Victorian Farmers Federation Grain Group's panel session on deregulation, despite being invited.

Yarrara grain grower Ron Hards asked VFF Grains Group president Russell Amery why the two companies were not present.

Mr Amery said both had been invited, but had chosen not to attend.

The panel at the conference - which included representatives from Grain Growers Association, Australian Bulk Alliance, AWB, Clear, AgFarm and Elders - was also asked about the absence of feedback to growers in the new marketplace, wheat quality and on-farm storage.

Several speakers reflected on the fact that much of the marketing risk since the deregulation of wheat exports was being passed back to farmers, especially those who chose to store grain on-farm.
