EASTERN Australia's latest wheat crop has passed milling, baking and other quality tests with flying colours.
Releasing its harvest quality report for the first time, GrainCorp said wheat quality had not declined during the past year despite a challenging season.
GrainCorp chief executive officer Ian Wilton took a swipe at industry participants who claimed Australian wheat quality was "on the slide".
"It's ill-informed commentary that poses the greatest threat to the reputation of Australian wheat exports," Mr Wilton said.
GrainCorp has five technical laboratories across eastern Australia for testing of grain quality.
The report on last season's harvest crop shows Australian Premium White wheat was of "exceptional quality", with significant increases in grain protein, particularly in Victoria.
The report said the grain size of APW wheat was high in the southern regions, while the northern zones had high test weights.
It said test-milling indicated APW wheat in Victoria had average flour extraction.
Australian Prime Hard wheat in eastern Australia was of "excellent" quality.
The APH grade had high test weights, and was low in moisture and screenings.
"Milling quality is very good, with high flour extraction levels, low ash and good colour grade values," the GrainCorp report said.
Similar results were reported for Australian Hard and Australian Standard White grades, with both having high test weights.
