TASMANIAN Premier David Bartlett has unveiled his full cabinet, which includes a Greens minister for the first time in Australian history.

Mr Bartlett was retained as leader of a minority government following the March 20 state election, which delivered 10 seats to both the Labor and Liberal parties and the remaining five to the Greens.

In a first for the state, Labor offered two cabinet positions to the Greens.

Greens leader Nick McKim will be take on five portfolios - human services, corrections and consumer protection, community development, climate change, as well as sustainable transport and alternative energy.

Fellow Greens MP Cassy O'Connor will be cabinet secretary.

The Greens have never before held a ministry in an Australian state or federal government.

Mr Bartlett relinquished his own education portfolio, but will be minister for innovation, science and technology, saying he needed to work more as leader of the hung parliament.

"I believe I need to act more as chairman of the board, more as conductor of the orchestra," he said.

"It won't be as heavy a ministerial load as education and skills was."

Mr Bartlett said the team represented a "new future for Tasmanian parliament".

"At this point in time and under these circumstances, this is the best cabinet I was capable of forming," he said.

"(It is) a new co-operative future which takes into account the capacities of individuals to make a contribution."

Former deputy premier Bryan Green, who was stood down in 2006 over his his dealings with the privately owned Tasmanian Compliance Corporation, was given six ministries, including primary industries and water and energy and resources.

Mr Bartlett said Mr Green had done his time on the backbench.

"One of the key areas of our economy... is the rolling out of water infrastructure, and Bryan Green now has a very key role in making that happen," he said.

"I'm confident he's got the capacity, the character and the ability to make it happen."

Mr Underwood will swear in the new cabinet at Hobart's Government House later on Wednesday.
