THE biggest-ever yarding of 10,000 weaner calves attracted strong rates at Carcoar, in central NSW, last week.
The yarding eclipsed the centre's previous record of 6500 head, set last year.
According to Landmark agent David Gardiner it was an "outstanding sale", with the best steers making $720 and the top heifers commanding $595.
"Overall it was an outstanding sale, and the calves had more weight in them due to the season," Mr Gardiner said.
According to the National Livestock Reporting Service, the yarding was made up predominantly of Angus weaners with smaller runs of Herefords and black baldies.
Buyers came from the surrounding areas as well as Queensland and Victoria.
Angus weaner steers topped at $770 or 198c/kg for the heavy weights, while medium weights commanded $520-$700, for an average of 212c/kg. Light weights sold for $430 to $600 to average 220c/kg.
Mr Gardiner said Tuxworth Pastoral Company at Molong in NSW sold Angus steers weighing 320-340kg to a top of $720.
Most of the other breeds offered averaged about 209c/kg for the medium weights. The extra-light weights made $390-$480.
The best of the Poll Herefords returned $720.
