EUROPEAN bulls were in demand at the Wodonga Beef Breeds sale last week, topping at $3900.

A total of 102 bulls were sold from the 128 offered for an average of $2220.

Auctioneer John Atkins, of Albury, said all bulls sold to restockers from the Upper Murray, Riverina and Victoria's North East. No bulls sold to butchers, which has been the case in previous years.

In the breakdown of results, Charolais bulls averaged $2892, Black and Red Simmental $2760, Limousin $2346, Angus $2032, and Hereford and Poll Hereford $1922.

The Muller family, of Shepparton, paid the top price of $3900 for Kenmere Duntroon, sold by Anne-Marie Collins from Kenmere Charolais stud at Cobbity in NSW.

Southern Meat Profit Day

MEAT and Livestock Australia's Southern Meat Profit Day this Friday will see experts from around the nation converge on the Melbourne Showgrounds.

Speakers include innovative Queensland stud producer Prue Bondfield, of Palgrove Charolais, and niche retailer Brendon Watts of Brendon's Quality Meats in East Doncaster.

Semex scholar

TOM Wilding-Davies, of Holbrook in NSW, has won the 2010 Semex Genetics Michigan State University Angus scholarship.

The scholarship, awarded during the recent Sydney Royal Easter Show, allows Tom to study for a semester at one of the world's leading livestock teaching institutions and be part of the annual Semex tour of the US beef industry.

Currently he works at Cargill Beef Australia's Jindalee feedlot at Stockinbingal, NSW, as part of the stock crew responsible for the development and health of 17,000 cattle on feed.
