INDUSTRIAL designer and engineer Frances Cook landed a dream job at Silvan Australia.
Just 10 months after completing a product design-engineering degree, Ms Cook was employed by Silvan and charged with the task of designing the company's next-generation of vineyard and orchard sprayers.
"Who would have thought what I drew on a page two years ago would now be a reality," Ms Cook said.
"It's been a fantastic journey, challenging and very interesting."
Silvan Australia took the wrapping off its latest G2 Supaflo sprayer, designed by Ms Cook, last week.
She was given a carte blanche brief by Silvan Australia for the design of the G2 Supaflo, as long as it met customer needs.
"Silvan's previous tank designs were cylindrical. How boring," Ms Cook said.
"I thought let's do something fantastic and spice it up a bit, while being technically very capable."
Apart from the endless hours of design work, Ms Cook also had to travel thousands of kilometres around Australia to meet farmers and hear what they were looking for in a sprayer.
Silvan Australia's managing director Steven Lelli said he told staff to ensure the feedback provided to Ms Cook was brutally honest.
"They were very honest but it provided excellent design direction. Their livelihood depends on machines like these after all," Ms Cook said.
A flush tank, mixer tank and main tank are incorporated into the G2 and a U-shaped tunnel houses the power take-off shaft used to run the sprayer's fan. There are no ladders or steps on the sprayer which makes it safer to use.
