HAY is staking a claim as the nation's wool capital, with thousands of dollars in prize money on offer at its June sheep show.

The Riverina town's annual sheep show has continued to run despite others falling by the wayside, and this year a total of $6500 cash will be offered in just two classes.

Hay sheep show spokeswoman Sally Ware said the event continued to grow.

The prize money is being offered by Riverina Wool, with $5000 cash going to the best March shorn hogget ram.

Another $1500 is offered to the winner of the March shorn ewe hogget of the show.

And while the studs put their best sheep on display at Hay, commercial wool growers also get the opportunity to compare their flocks.

"This year, the flock section will receive a boost with a number of well-known animal health companies providing some of their product as prizes," Mrs Ware said.

"We are really proud that we can get both commercial and stud producers to show their sheep at an event which is a highlight for breeders in the district," she said..

  • The show will be held on Saturday, June 19.
