AGFEST in Tasmania recorded its biggest opening day with more than 18,000 people through the gates on Thursday last week.

However, overall crowd numbers were down for the four-day festival at Oaks, near Launceston.

Vaderstad national sales manager Paul Birbeck said visitors were cautious about placing orders for machinery.

Mr Birbeck said despite low grain prices there was an "air of optimism"

Agfest is one of Australia's largest agriculture field days and is organised by the Rural Youth Organisation of Tasmania.

World Champion woodchopper Dave Foster was among the visitors to Agfest.

Mr Foster, who was born in Devonport, in northwest Tasmania, gave a woodchopping demonstration and announced he would make a comeback to competitive woodchopping.

"I have 183 world titles and I would like 184," Mr Foster said.
