MAY is the month to find out where good food comes from in West Gippsland.
Three successful farmers are opening their gates to visitors on Saturday as part of the the Baw Baw district's Sustain Gippsland: Farms for Our Future project.
The farmers will show visitors how food is produced, how to look after the land and offer a variety of foods including a range of olive products, goat meat sausages and beef.
Sam Cabbabe, a retired airline pilot, has developed a small but successful olive enterprise, Tarago Olives near Noojee.
Sam produces his own olive oils, pastes and jams on-farm, and sells them to many of Melbourne's top restaurants.
Ian Clancy and Carolyn Fergusons at Buln Buln have transformed Springsure Hill from a rundown, weed-infested property into a productive and environmentally-friendly beef enterprise that supplies Enviromeat.
They will be serving Enviromeat sausages at the open day.
Yarragon dairy farmers Bruce and Lynda Heywood started planting trees long before Landcare was established and at last count had planted about 10,000 trees in shelter belts and fenced off and protected their entire creek frontage.
Bruce believes tree plantings contribute to their higher than average milk production, as well as providing habitat for wildlife.
The Baw Baw Open Farms Day will be held from 10am to 3pm.
