ABOUT 2300 dairy heifers were loaded on to a ship at Portland on Monday bound for China, Australia's largest dairy cattle export market.
The heifers came mainly from the Western District and exported by the Australian Rural Exports shipment.
Australian dairy cattle exports increased by 38 per cent last year, with 71,200 head sold for a total of $119 million.
Of these, 25,000 head came from Victoria, accounting for about 4 per cent of the state's total number of heifers.
