THE whiteface breed steamrolled into Wodonga today, almost cracking a million dollar national sale gross.
The multi-vendor event drew 194 registered buyers and recorded a clearance of 91 per cent.
A total of 153 horned and polled bulls were offered with 139 sold to a top of $40,000, average of $6644 and gross of $923,500.
Last year, 114 bulls sold to a top of $42,000 and average of $6539.
Yavenvale Herefords, Adelong, and Newcomen Herefords, Ensay, paid the top price for junior and grand champion horned bull, Mawarra Virginian.
Weighing 958kg, the 22-month-old bull was sired by the $42,000 Australian-bred Cootharaba Magnum.
Vendors, the Sykes family, of Mawarra Stud, Longford, averaged $19,666 for their team of six bulls.
The Hain family, Arable stud, Cooma, paid the top price of $12,000 in the polled bulls for Wanrua Daybreaker.
Offered by the Wanrua Stud, Maffra, the 20-month-old bull weighed 950kg and had an eye muscle area of 127sqcm.
Landmark's Victorian stud stock manager Ray Attwell described the sale result as the best in 15 years.
"It's due to the seasonal conditions and the restocking of females,'' he said.
Herefords Australia Limited chairman Hilary O'Leary said commercial support from traditional Hereford strongholds in Victoria and South Australia had underpinned the sale.
"The general change in the season has given people more confidence and money to spend on genetics,'' Mr O'Leary said.
