HEATHCOTE has defeated Mount Pleasant in the annual Cliff and Peter White memorial shield clash at Toolleen.

It is the third time the Saints have won the match since the clubs started playing for the shield in 1997 - the other wins came in 2007 and 2009.

The shield is named after father and son, Cliff and Peter White, who started playing at Mount Pleasant in 1975.

Blues senior vice-president Dave McNamara said both men were passionate supporters of the club.

"They both had larger-than-life personalities and were loved by everyone," McNamara said.

Cliff was captain and coach before taking over as president. Peter played some games for Carlton and had back-to-back premiership wins against Heathcote as captain and coach in 1993-94. "He also won a premiership with Kyabram in 1996," McNamara said.

"A couple of weeks later, he and his father went fishing out at Port Campbell and never came back. It was pretty tragic for everyone."

Although the Saints won the match 11.16 (82) to 7.10 (52), McNamara said the Blues were looking forward to taking back the shield next year.
