A SPECIAL unit is being set up to stamp out bullying in the NSW Fire Brigades.

It follows nearly 40 reports of bullying, harassment and assault in the service since an inquiry panel was set up to investigate problems over the past three decades.

Emergency Services Minister Steve Whan said the new $1.3 million workplace conduct and investigations unit would give the fire brigade the resources to investigate complaints and prevent further incidents.

Other initiatives include a 24-hour hotline for employees to discuss workplace issues and liaison officers to work with the police and Independent Commission Against Corruption.
