A WEST Australian pig farmer with plans to convert piggery waste into biogas is this year's Rural Woman of the Year.

Sue Middleton won the Rural Industry Research and Development Corporation's award from six other state finalists last night.

Victorian finalist, Benalla beef farmer Alana Johnson, was runner-up.

Slice of Angus pie

AUSTRALIA'S largest meat pie manufacturer is the latest company to jump on the Angus brand bandwagon.

Patties Foods, who makes Four 'N Twenty meat pies, unveiled its Legendary Angus Beef pie yesterday. The move comes after the phenomenal success fast food chains have had with Angus-branded hamburgers in the past 10 months.

DAIRY farmers producing the nation's best quality milk will be acknowledged from next week in The Weekly Times.

The coverage will be part of the Dairy Australia Countdown Downunder Milk Quality Awards.

ACCC report due

THE Australian Competition and Consumer Commission is due to release the results of its informal review of the acquisition of Rockdale Beef by a meat processing company tomorrow.

In April the ACCC launched an inquiry to examine the proposed purchase to make sure it is not anti-competitive.

Piggery standards

AUSTRALIAN Pork Limited will launch its new National Environmental Guidelines for Piggeries at the Pan Pacific Pork Expo on the Gold Coast on June 16-17.

The guidelines cover site selection, cleaner production and effluent treatment.
