"It's a very, very impressive property," Tony said.

"It's got fantastic views from wherever you look on the property."

Tony purchased Killara in 1987 and has employed a manager to run a cattle breeding and fattening operation.

The property can carry more than 1000 steers or 500 breeder cattle and their replacements.

In addition to the cattle, the property also has a 57ha vineyard.

Varieties include pinot noir, chardonnay, sauvignon blanc, viognier, cabernet sauvignon, merlot, shiraz and pinot grigio.

The vineyard is drip irrigated from a 120 megalitre capacity catchment dam and about 60 per cent of the grape production is sold under contract.

Selling agent Peter Balharrie said the property was impressive.

"Killara has a double frontage to the Woori Yallock Creek, which meanders through the property, and is divided into 46 main paddocks, with a strategically placed laneway system for ease of management and stock movements," he said.

"Killara has an impressive history as in the early years of the previous century it was owned by members of the David Syme (of The Age) and David Mitchell (father of Dame Nellie Melba) families.

"This property traditionally has been held under extended periods of ownership reflecting its premium position, unique features and ambience."

The main four-bedroom home at Killara is surrounded by a beautiful and mature garden and offers stunning views of the Yarra Ranges.

The house has a large outdoor living area and an inground pool.

There is also a three-bedroom managers' residence and two two-bedroom cottages.

Farm infrastructure at Killara includes two large machinery sheds, a stud cattle shed, cattle yards and several hay sheds.
