EDIE Thomas, one of the great women of Australian equestrian sport, died last weekend, just two weeks before she would have turned 90.

Edie, the mother of successful competitors Beverley Gardiner, a Garryowen winner, Raymond Thomas, an Australian champion showjumping rider, and Cecil Thomas, who showed successful harness horses, was "show mum" to a generation of young riders who had the opportunity to ride many of the Thomas family ponies.

Edie also formed the enormously successful Tullamarine Pony Club.

Edie was unfailingly helpful in sharing her vast knowledge with all who asked and was a much-loved member of the equestrian world. Many of Australia's top showjumping and show riders have happy memories of the Thomas family's hospitality during events.

Mrs Thomas' funeral will be held later this week.
