A 20-year-old man has drowned after a platform he was working on at a central Queensland dam collapsed.

The work platform collapsed into the Pioneer River, 30km west of Mackay, tipping the man into Marian Weir just after 1.30pm, RACQ CQ rescue helicopter spokesman Phillip Dowler said.

"A 20-year-old male is deceased. He was working inside a platform structure attached to the weir when it collapsed," he said.

A Department of Community Safety spokeswoman would not confirm the man had died, saying only that emergency services were still at the scene.

She said another worker on the structure resurfaced with minor injuries.

"Four fire crews including swiftwater rescue technicians are on scene along with paramedics," the spokeswoman said.

"The circumstances surrounding the man's disappearance are not known at this time."
