Today he is the chief executive officer of CREST Victoria.

CREST is a volunteer organisation where members monitor emergency frequencies and relay calls for assistance from the public to the relevant emergency service.

Mr Smith has been nominated for this year's Regional Achievement and Community Award in the BlueScope Distribution Leadership and Innovation category for his contribution to CREST.

He described his nomination as "an absolute honour", but modestly declared he had no chance of winning.

Nominations are open for this year's awards, which include the Regional Development Victoria Business Achievement Award, the Regional Development Victoria Trade and Career Achievement Award, the Parks Victoria Regional Achiever Award and the Parks Victoria Environment and Sustainability Award.

The other awards are the Fonterra Dairy Leadership Award, the Prime Super Community Group of the Year Award and the RACV free2go Youth Community Involvement Award.
