Mr Holmgren, who is a co-founder of the permaculture movement, is also at the cutting edge in Victoria of Transition Towns, a grassroots movement that began in the UK and which is now spreading globally.
Mr Holmgren said Transition Towns was creating awareness of sustainable living while "building local ecological resilience of communities in the face of dwindling resources and potential climate change impacts".
