NEVILLE Meyer has been an axeman almost all his life.
The 68-year-old Romsey resident competed at wood chopping shows across Australia for more than 40 years before retiring four years ago.
He developed a love for the sport from an early age.
"My father was a wood chopper and there were six boys and one girl in the family and we all took up the sport of wood chopping, all bar my sister," Mr Meyer said.
"Now the sons and grandsons are into it and there's about 14 or 15 of the family still competing so it really is a family sport for us."
Mr Meyer bid a reluctant farewell to competitive wood chopping because of arthritis but is still involved in the sport.
He now cuts logs for the Melbourne Show's woodchopping events.
Last week The Weekly Times caught up with him as he delivered a load of logs to the Melbourne Showgrounds where he stacked the wood with straw to keep them moist.
