MELBOURNE'S dam levels are expected to rise steadily over the next few months, after above average rainfall and major projects helped stem storage drops in the first half of the year.
The city's water catchments started the year at 37.4 per cent and have fallen just 3.7 per cent, which is less than half the average 9.5 per cent drop since the beginning of the drought in 1997.
Between January 1 and June 30, the catchments received 505mm of rain, 16 per cent above the long term average and the highest rainfall for the period since 2007.
A Melbourne Water spokesman said it had been a while since the catchments had been this wet at this time of the year, so they were hoping to see storages start to rise in earnest over the next few months.
